The mother of Eliza Mary Donaldson Selby was Mary Dorothy Grey. The Greys are believed to have originated in Normandy and came to England with William the Conquerer. Anchetil de Greye is named in the Doomsday book of 1086 and is believed to be the ancestor of the Grey/ Gray noble families of England. The attached document traces the connection of Eliza's family to the Plantagenet kings of England, and through them to many of the royal families of the European continent. There is a blood-line connection for all descendants of Henry and Eliza to Edward I, King of England and his Queen Consort Margaret of France. For me, Edward I and Margaret are my 21-greats grandparents.

Valerie Edwards motivated me to write this story, and provided me with the initial genealogical data and continued her assistance in documenting dates and citations in this paper.

Currently on BBC television (Britain) is a dramatisation of the wars between the cousins in what has become known as the War of the Roses. This has made me look more closely at who was who and to reread Don's account in the March version of his history of the Knight Gregsons in Appendix 10D under the heading Richard III. According to my understanding, now, Richard III was killed by Henry Tudor who became Henry VII of England after killing Richard at Bosworth Field. It was not Henry IV - he was a Lancastrian. Henry Tudor was the son of Edmund Tudor and Margaret Beaufort who was widowed aged 13 having given birth to Henry. Seemingly she was instrumental in encouraging her son to fight to claim the throne aided by her third husband Thomas Stanley first Earl of Derby. Edmund Tudor was the son of Catherine of Valois who had married firstly Henry V and secondly Owen Tudor of Wales.

It was Henry VII who married Elizabeth of York (daughter of Edward IV) thus cementing the houses of York and Tudor with a link to the house of Lancaster via Catherine de Valois and her first husband Henry V of England.

I found the link back to Edward 1 through Eliza Mary Selby Donaldson, established by Lilian & Don, fascinating and admire the work it must have taken to find this. I was so inspired that I thought I would try to see how far back this could be extended, and tracked back mainly through Family Trees on ancestry.com but also consulted other sources on the Internet.

I found the line can be extended back to Charlemagne, with at least two links. The first is through Charlemagne's illegitimate son, Hugh L'Abbe & his daughter Petronilla. However there is dispute as to whether Petronilla's father is the son of Charlemagne or another prominent Hugh L'Abbe [some sources accept the link, others do not]. I searched further and found a second link through a legitimate son of Charlemagne, Louis 1 'the Pious" of France, through the de Vermandois family. This appears undisputed.

To help tracking, I have used the Plantagenet/Anjou crest to tag ancestors back to the "first" Plantagenet [according to Wikipedia], Ingelgerius. I have tagged those in the lines linking Charlemagne with the Charlemagne Crown. I would be very pleased if anyone who finds a weakness in these links would let me know.
